F-1 and M-1 Visa: Students (I-20)

What is an F1 Visa?

The F-1 student visa is a non-immigrant visa that permits international students to enter the U.S. and study at institutions approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). It is the most common type of student visa for those looking to attend a U.S. university or college, and you can only apply for an F-1 visa once you have been accepted by an accredited U.S. institution.

As an F-1 student, your length of stay will depend on the specific program you enroll in. The I-20 form provided by your chosen university will indicate the expiration date of your program. You must complete your degree before this expiration date, which will help determine how long you can stay in the U.S.

F-1 Visa Requirements 

If you intend to apply for an F-1 student visa, there are several important rules to consider. You must meet the following criteria for your application to be approved:

• Institution Certification: The college or university you plan to attend must be approved by SEVP Immigration & Customs Enforcement.
• Full-Time Enrollment: You must be registered as a full-time student at the institution during your academic term.
• English Language Proficiency: You need to meet the required English language proficiency standards of the institution or be enrolled in courses designed to improve your English skills.
• Sufficient Funding: You must demonstrate that you have adequate financial resources to cover your tuition and living expenses while in the U.S.
• Valid Passport: Your passport should remain valid for at least six months beyond your program’s completion date.
• Home Country Residency: You are required to have a residence in your home country to which you will return after completing your degree.

The Process

The F-1 student visa process starts when you are accepted by a SEVP-certified university in the U.S. After you are accepted, your university will issue your I-20 form. This document outlines your study plans and includes relevant information about your stay.

When your I-20 form is issued; the following details are recorded in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System: your SEVIS ID number, Program start and end date, Intended program of study and funding sources and Cost of attendance at your chosen school.

The student must pay the SEVIS Fee and complete the DS-160 Visa Application, all prospective international students must complete a DS-160 to receive an F-1 visa. 

This form will be needed at your Interview, where the US consulate or embassy confirms you are coming to study as a legitimate, serious student. During your visa interview, you need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support your studies in the U.S. and affirm your intention to return home after completing your education.

What is an M1 Visa?

The M1 Visa is issued by the U.S. government to international students seeking to enroll in vocational or non-academic programs. Various vocational courses are available at institutions in the U.S., including Aviation or Flight School, Professional Makeup Courses, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and more.

The M-1 visa is a type of non-immigrant visa for which eligible individuals can apply. It’s important to note that this visa cannot be used for academic purposes, such as pursuing a degree from an accredited institution. Students holding a valid M-1 visa are permitted to stay in the U.S. temporarily for a duration of one year.

Requirements

The M-1 visa has the following requirements:

1. Acceptance into an accredited school that will provide you with Form I-20.
2. A commitment to leave the U.S. after completing your course of study.
3. Adequate financial resources to meet your needs.
4. Proper preparation for the course of study.
5. Enrollment in a full course of study.
